Proposal
State of Interest –
I am interested in doing my project on hip hop because rap music has a very big impact on society today. Hip Hop puts images into the heads of their listeners. I want to learn about how people have tried to display a positive image and better their community with the music they make. I care about Hip Hop music because the lyrics and images shown are very important. The majority of the people who listen to hip hop mirror the things they do, say, and the way the live.
Essential Question –
My Topic for the Senior Project is Music. My Essential Question is “How can Hip Hop Music improve the lives of its listeners?”
Project Overview –
For my project, I want to prove that Hip Hop music cannot only promote drugs and negativity but it can also improve people and show people a better way to live by putting positivity into their lyrics rather than discussing the bad things that people frown upon. I am going to use presentations, home-made videos and I plan on holding a concert for artists that have music with positive messages.
Preliminary Research –
· On Friday May 28 Stephen Allen wrote an article called “Positive Effects of Hip Hop Outweigh Bad.” This article was about how an article was posted in a tribune which the author didnt agree with he says that Hip Hop is all about being black and the street culture created by Biggie Smalls and Jay Z. There are many youth educational groups that influence youth with the use of hip hop.
· On January 11, 2012, Gabe Ramirez wrote an article called “Hip-Hop that helps kids stay out of trouble.” In this article, he talks about how a 30-year-old chinese man also known as DJ Phatrick made it into a college and used his Dj’ing skills well. He volunteered with Sessions LA, which uses Hip Hop to keep kids out of trouble.
· In 2010, Noah Webb posted an article called “Hip-Hop Helps Teach Everything from English to Algebra.” A teacher named Alan Sitomer that used Hip Hop in his class which made a great difference. In the article it stated that students would usually talk about Music, Girls etc. after school but then English class came into the discussion and students were looking forward to going to class. Mr. Sitomer used Tupac’s music in his class as an alternative to a poetry lesson which the students loved. He looked into Tupac’s lyrics and realized it wasn’t all about the hard life he lived but about treating people with respect and standing up for yourself. The class got the students excited and more into learning about the lesson.
· On eHow I found an article called “Positive Effects of Hip Hop Music.” By Frances Hall. In this article Mr. Hall said that hip hop music promotes critical thinking due to the many metephors used by the artists in the industry. The lyrics always have a meaning and sometimes they have you thinking and its good to exercise the mind. Hip Hop music can also promote political awareness. Hip Hop artist Lupe Fiasco has a song named “Baba says cool for thought” which is about what happened in hurricaine Katrina and a outcry to stop the violence that happened at Virginia Tech and Columbine.
· On eHow I found an article called “Definition of Hip-Hop Music” by Kevin McCafferty. In this article he explained his definition of Hip-Hop Music. He thinks that Hip-Hop music has Culture, Influence and history. Hip Hop has a mass audience, he believes that some people has praised Hip Hop for social change, while other shun it due to its violence and criminal lifestyles.
